A Letter to a New Graduate

By Ashley Paskill on April 29, 2018

Dear soon-to-be-graduate,

Congratulations on your success! Whether you are graduating high school, college, or another institution, you have worked so hard and have accomplished so much. You may not feel accomplished, but many never get to this moment. It is your time to shine!

It may be tempting to brush this achievement off as nothing, the blood, sweat, and tears have led you to a remarkable moment in your life. Take a step back and remember the times you have spent at your school and those who have helped you get here.

There is so much to do before you officially walk across the stage and get your diploma. You may have finals yet to take and projects to complete. These may seem impossible and stressful, but do not let them hold you back. Keep pushing and finish strong.

This time may leave you wondering if you are ready for the next chapter. You may not feel ready for college. You may feel like you have the adequate skills to enter the workforce. Do not give into these feelings. You are ready. You are prepared for everything.

As you go about these next couple weeks, reminisce about the memories you have made and the fun times you had here. Whether you spent four years or ten, the halls of your school have seen you struggle and succeed in your worst and best times.

Take time to thank those who have helped you along the way. Whether it was friends, family, professors, or a security guard, there have been people that have helped you along the way to get you to where you are now. These people have cheered you on. Acknowledge them.

Take time to soak in your lasts, like the last time you will be in the buildings that have been your second home or the last time you will walk a certain path. Visit your favorite coffee spot and lunch go-to. Embrace the things that made your experience what it was while you can.

On graduation day, take a deep breath and look around. Take in the last day as a student. Hug your friends and family. Look around at those around you, for this is the last time you will all be together in one place. Exchange contact information.

Most importantly, acknowledge how much you have grown as a person and how much you have accomplished. Even if you did not win an award, you have left a legacy on campus, in the classroom and out. Celebrate you and feel your emotions.

Congratulations!

Signed,

A recent graduate
